Parents often assume that whatever an athlete has not developed by the time they sign will get handled at the next level. On the mental performance side, the numbers say otherwise.

The Staffing Picture
NTangible’s review of NCAA staffing, published 10 September 2026, estimates that about 90% of NCAA institutions have no embedded mental performance capability at all.
- Division I: 91 of 355 institutions — 25.7%
- Division II: 3 of 293 institutions
- Division III: 4 of 425 institutions
- Overall: roughly 98 of 1,073 institutions
Even inside Division I it is thinner than the headline suggests. Among the 65 departments with staff, 63% employed exactly one person for the entire athletic department — every sport, every roster, one provider.
By competitive tier: 35.7% at the Football Bowl Subdivision level, 15.3% at Football Championship Subdivision.
And Then There Is Whether Athletes Use It
- About 67% of athletes know where to get help
- 47% feel comfortable seeking it
- 22% engage in formal help-seeking
- 6.7% attend campus counselling in a given year
What a Family Should Take From This
First, ask the question on visits. “Who on staff works on the mental side, and how often would my daughter actually see them?” The answer is informative either way, and most families never ask it.
Second, do not bank on it. If nine in ten programmes have nobody, the realistic planning assumption is that this gets developed before an athlete arrives, not after.
That is not a reason for alarm. It is a reason to treat the mental side as part of development now, the same way arm care is — something worked on steadily rather than addressed when it becomes a problem.
Why We Measure It Early
An athlete who knows how they respond under pressure at fourteen has four years to work on it. An athlete who discovers it in their first college season is solving it during the thing it affects.
That is the reasoning behind including the NTangible Clutch Factor Assessment in every High Level Throwing® Video Assessment, rather than treating it as a separate speciality.
